Most design systems die at handover. The ones that live have a maintainer, a changelog, and fewer components than you'd expect.

Design systems that survive handover

A library is not a system

A folder of Figma components is an asset. A system is a set of decisions (spacing, type scale, colour roles, interaction states) that make the next decision obvious.

If every new screen still triggers a debate about padding, you have a library, not a system.

Fewer components, more tokens

The common failure is building forty components and three tokens. You end up with a CardWithImageAndBadge that nobody can reuse.

Invert it. Get the tokens right and most components become thin compositions that teams can assemble themselves.

Name a maintainer or expect decay

Systems rot at the edges: a one-off variant here, an inline hex there. Without someone whose job includes pruning, you're back to six button styles within a year.
